If you’ve recently joined a Crossfit box or are considering diving into this high-intensity workout regime, you might find yourself overwhelmed by the unique jargon. Terms like WOD, AMRAP, and EMOM can make you feel like you need a translator. But fear not! This Crossfit dictionary is here to help you decode the language of Crossfit, making your fitness journey a bit smoother.
The WOD is the core of the Crossfit program. Every day, a new workout is posted for athletes to complete. These workouts vary widely and are designed to keep your body constantly adapting and improving. A WOD can include anything from weightlifting and gymnastics to running and rowing. No two WODs are the same, which keeps things exciting and challenging.
AMRAP workouts are all about pushing your limits within a set period. The goal is to complete as many rounds or reps of a given set of exercises as you can before time runs out. For example, an AMRAP workout might be a 20-minute session where you aim to complete as many rounds of 10 pull-ups, 20 push-ups, and 30 squats as possible.
In an EMOM workout, you perform a specific number of reps of an exercise at the start of every minute. After completing the reps, you rest for the remainder of the minute before starting again at the top of the next minute. This continues for a set number of minutes. EMOMs are great for building endurance and pacing yourself.
In Crossfit, a gym is called a box. This term reflects the minimalist, no-frills environment typical of many Crossfit gyms. Boxes are usually open spaces with the necessary equipment for functional fitness exercises, such as barbells, kettlebells, and pull-up bars.
Achieving a PR is a significant milestone in Crossfit. It represents the best performance you’ve ever achieved in a particular exercise or workout. Whether it’s lifting a heavier weight or completing a workout faster than before, setting a PR is a moment of personal victory.
When you complete a WOD as Rx, it means you’ve done it exactly as prescribed, with no modifications to the weights or movements. This is the gold standard for Crossfit athletes, indicating a high level of fitness and skill.
